Scientific Name

Indigofera hirsuta (Rodriguez-Kabana, 1988).

Pest Effects, Nematodes

Sting nematode was scarce following cover cropping with hairy indigo, and yields of succeeding crops of snap beans or cabbage were little reduced (Rhoades, 1983).

Rotation with the leguminous forage crop hairy indigo (Indigofera hirsuta) was not as effective as treatment with aldicarb (Temik) in improving peanut yields, but rotation did lead to a 15% yield improvement over continuous peanuts. Juvenile Meloidogyne arenaria were significantly reduced in peanuts that followed hairy indigo; further reduction was caused through application of aldicarb (Rodriguez-Kabana, 1988).

In a greenhouse pot survey of various warm-season legumes, hairy indigo was particularly effective in reducing rootknot nematodes (Meloidogyne arenaria and M. incognita) and soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines race 4). Field studies also indicated effectiveness in reducing densities of rootknot and cyst nematodes (Rodriguez-Kabana, 1988).
