UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program
Grant Opportunities

SARE grants are used to increase knowledge about sustainable agricultural practices and to help farmers and ranchers adopt those practices. The Western SARE program administers grants in several categories that help it achieve those aims. Each grant operates on an annual cycle and is selected through a competitive process. Applicants are typically informed whether their project has been approved for funding within six months of the submission deadline. Dispersal of funds rests on Congressional budget decisions.

WSARE issues Calls for Proposals in the following areas:

  • Farmer/Rancher grants, up to $15,000 for an individual producer and $30,000 for three or more producers to conduct on-farm research.
  • Professional + Producer grants, up to $15,000 for professionals working with one producer and $30,000 with three or more producers.
  • Research and Education grants, up to $200,000, for applied research involving agricultural producers.
  • Professional Development Program grants, $30,000 to $60,000 to help ag-support professionals train other professionals in sustainable agriculture concepts.
