Junior Specialist - Biodigester Residue Fertilization, Agricultural Sustainability Institute
The candidate will contribute to research under the project entitled “Producing Valuable Co-Products and Improving Nutrient Management for Dairy Manure Digester Systems”.
The researcher will be a key contributor to a project funded by CDFA to analyze the effects of dairy manure digester co-products for nutrient management in tomatoes and corn at the Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility. The junior specialist will contribute to implementation of a field trial comparing anaerobically digested dairy liquids and solids to mineral fertilizer. The junior specialist will be responsible for measuring the nitrogen mineralization potential of the different soil amendments, nitrogen uptake and effect on soil properties (carbon storage and salinity), as well as crop yields.
The desired candidate will have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Plant Sciences, Soil Science, Biosystems Engineering Environmental Science and Management, or a related field. The preferred applicant will have knowledge of some or all of the following: (1) soil and/or agricultural field research and sampling methodology (2) carbon and nitrogen cycling (mineralization, uptake, storage, losses) (3) data analysis, research report writing and presentation. Other desired qualifications include experience or knowledge of dairy digesters, drip irrigation, and outreach of research results to external stakeholders.
Appointment date: The position is expected to support a Junior Specialist at 100% for a period of 1 year and 9 months.
