The science of nitrogen
The California Nitrogen Assessment examines three specific areas of science relating to nitrogen and agriculture.
Biogeochemistry
The first area of examination is the biogeochemistry of nitrogen: How nitrogen moves through California agroecosystems and the state as a whole.
Management Practices
Assessment fellows are also examining different on-farm practices and how these practices can influence the fate of nitrogen in California agriculture.
Health and Ecosystems Impacts
The assessment also seeks to clarify and evaluate the state of knowledge about nitrogen's impacts on human and ecosystem health.
Research Questions
We surveyed our stakeholders for questions about nitrogen in California and synthesized their questions into a list of research questions.
