Everything You Want to Know about Sludge
Treated sewage sludge (biosolids) and how to use it in agriculture is the focus of a January 29-30 conference in Sacramento. "This will be an opportunity for ag, academic, regulatory, environmental and wastewater treatment representatives to share information about the use of biosolids as a fertilizer and soil amendment in agriculture," says David Chaney, education coordinator at the UC Davis- based statewide Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP), one of the conference sponsors. Topics include crop and soil responses to biosolids; legal, liability and economic issues; and practical experiences with biosolids. Particular attention will be given to conditions in California, Chaney says. Other sponsors include the California Department of Food and Agriculture, Cal-EPA, and the Central Valley Wastewater Mangers Association.
