Urban rodent summit among special events funded by IPM, SAREP

Conservation practices and riparian restoration will be discussed at a Yolo County event focused on bringing farm edges back to life.
DAVIS -- Two University of California statewide special programs and the International Tree Crops Institute have pooled together nearly $20,000 to fund 17 educational events, ranging from an urban rodent "summit" to an intergenerational farm transition workshop.
The UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) and UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Project cooperated with the international tree crops organization to fund events addressing integrated pest management in agricultural or urban settings, workshops, field days, seminars and other events addressing integrated pest management in agricultural or urban settings. Some of the areas to be covered include organically acceptable pest control methods, biologically based alternatives to methyl bromide, agroforestry practices, and the development of sustainable community food systems.
"We are excited to fund such varied topics as workshops on coalition-building for farm-to-school programs, and events helping farmers make the transition to organic tree crop systems," said SAREP Director Sean L. Swezey.
IPM director Frank Zalom was glad his program is able to pool resources on events like the "Urban Rodent Summit" in the San Francisco Bay Area. "This kind of workshop meets the goals of both of our programs in subject areas of mutual interest," Zalom says. Grant recipients and funded events are grouped in three general areas:
